Jackson Sundown and Hudson
|
The photo is of Jackson Sundown, a famous rodeo rider who rode at Calgary and the other major northwest rodeos. He won the famous Pendleton roundup in 1916 at the age of 53 riding an "unrideable" horse named "Angel," and used his winnings to buy a new car, as pictured. The other champion rider who placed second in the competition was George Fletcher, who was African-American.
Sundown rode with Chief Joseph in the Nez Pierce wars, after which he retreated to Canada with the remnants of his tribe all wanted "war criminals." He returned to the stateside Rez secretly in the late 1870's and from 1910 lived the rest of his life in Idaho.
Both Sundown and Fletcher are in the Rodeo Hall of Fame.
