Good question and here is the answer. I have a 360 chrysler in my car and that was the reason for the build placing the box at the front of the car because the starter on the 360 is in the way.
Here is what you need to do for a stock Hudson conversion. AND BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER THIS IS FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES AND TO BE USED AT YOUR OWN RISK AS THE QUALITY OF THE WORK MUST BE PERFECT AND SAFE. Had to throw that in!!
Get a steering box from an Isuzu rodeo or trooper or pickup
I will post a picture of the exact box. When at the wreckers getting this part take one of the tie rods also and be sure to get the pitman arm steering coupler etc. If possible get yourself a spare box as these boxes are really expensive new. Probably never need it but just in case.
You are going to mount this box in close proximity to the location of old box and will need to fabricate a metal plate to fasten to the side of the frame where the old box is to mount the new box.
You will need to cut off your old box at the base of the steering column leaving enough material to install a box coupler safely.
You will remove the pitman arm from the new box rotate a quarter turn and reinstall. You will then place your wheels straight and center your steering wheel and center the box.
Easy enough to remove steering wheel and recenter it after if you have trouble. But the rest Must be centered.
Take your old drag link and cut it off close to the end that does NOT fasten to the center point steering system.
When cut you will find it to be hollow and that the internal diameter is exactly a fit for the external diameter of the Izusu tie rod end.
Measure the exact length required for center point to pitman eye center. Insert the tie rod end into the hudson drag link cut it more if required until the length matches and weld it in place. Then take the assembly and drill SMALL holes in it to insert roll pins and drive them into place this makes for a safety backup. As you would have to break the weld and shear the roll pins to lose steering. Now make a bracket and install a pump on the engine you do not need to use an Izusu pump use something more available and easily obtained. You may have to get hoses made up depending on your choices. Voila power steering on a stock Hudson!!!
