For the BIN of this engine you get some nice parts like the Twin H and the double pulley. If I was closer I would snap this up for parts. Might even be a good core to rebuild.

Yeah, and obviously the seller realizes that.
When looking at these engines, are there any external clues as to the age other than the serial number? Did any aspect of external design change when hydraulic lifters were used? Can older engines be easily retrofitted to use hydraulic lifters?

When you look for the serial number its in a diff location.
There are oil holes near the lifter to fill it. Same as solid lifter but a little larger so yes you could modify for hydraulic. All the notes I have seen and said these lifters they used were noisy. I have not seen many conversions of older blocks to hydraulic lifter and I have wondered that myself.

Can you refresh my memory on the location of SN's for newer/AMC blocks?
I wonder if any of the Hudson gurus would have some info on solid to hydraulic lifter conversion.

Drivers side about 10 inches from front of engine on top of block on a little bump out made just for SN
In pic about look at top outlet if you look under it and a little back you can see the area.

OK, you mean the rectangle shape on the driver's side of the block, right? Mine is not there so I guess I have a real McCoy Hudson engine by jingo. After the merger in 54, did AMC keep any real Hudson operations intact like engine manufacturing?

Nope they ran out the supply sold the rest to JC Whitney and started rolling their own junk.

So, you're saying that Hashes have Nash engines... If having a Nash built engine is the only way to get hydraulic lifers, I'll keep lovin' the solid tappets in my fine Hudson engine.

Later on AMC made some nice engines that went into the Javelins and AMX's they were hot engines.

Yeah, and there's still quite a following for those later V-8s. After all, AMC had to shake their image of slow, crappy, old fart cars if they were going to stay in the game.
