Any issue with using a modern thermostat in a 308? Mine seems to be running hotter than I'd like, not boiling over but still above the half way section on the temp gauge. Tested the thermostat in a pan of water and it's opening at 180 as required.
There is how to link on the HET site that recomends installing a 1/4" plug in the bypass hole, not sure what they mean, the bypass hole on my engine appears to be a rectangular hole about 3/8" x 1"

Yes you cannot run the modern thermostat as it does not have a bypass hole in it. Refer to this thread in the middle you will see the soft plug installed in the goose neck.
