Sounds like the 12v conversion. The starter motor is probably still 6v the 12v is causing the bendix to engage hard. This added torque can cause what you have seen. Look at the bendix and look at the teeth on the flywheel and see if they are damaged from hard engages.

Test the starter to see if its still 6v if it is you need to convert it to 12v. You can get the 12v windings for the starter.

When you start the car does the starter seem to be making a lot of noise like its engaging rough?

thanks for the reply
the engagement seems ok if a little hard no untoward noise realy it dosent say whether its 6 or twelve volt the number is MCH6204 9G but i am guessing its six volt the moving gear (bendix we call it) on the end of the shaft looks ok not badly damaged. the starter looks nearly new hudson plate on it. i found some broken starter parts in the boot when i got the car( broken in the same place) should i change the windings or could i buy a 12 volt starter anywhere (shipping would kill me) or maybe new windings and a new front casting if they are available this would keep shipping costs down. Anyone have any starter parts they dont need. I have just started driving the car more often and love it have a hudson fulton sunvisor on now and it looks superb thanks for any help regards Barry

Yes you can get the 12v windings from your local jobber. The front casing you may be able to find local as there are other Hudson owners in England.

I would guess its a 6V this a common problem when a 12V conversion is made. On my 54 Sedan I am restoring I am converting my starter to 12V I got the windings from my local NAPA dealer.

The Wilson part number for the field coils is 55-06-4454 you need a set.

Also we need more pics send em to my email I will get them loaded.

hi again i dont think you realise how hard it is here to get parts ! re winding companys wont look at low voltage stuff at all i would have to get the windings from NAPA but NAPA wont ship to the UK do you know where i could get windings ? a company that will ship to the uk please. I think this must be the problem as the car had the problem before i got it and the twelve volt conversion had already been done (badly). The broken part is being welded at this moment so am keeping my fingers crossed. the starter motor must have been used on other cars do you have any cross reference on that thw willys jeep starter looks like the hudson one! any help you can give to resolve this problem permanently would be a big help thanks Barry
